Clonazepam is a long-acting benzodiazepine with slower elimination from the body; therefore, the drug’s metabolites can be detected in the bloodstream even if you have stopped taking the drug. The half-life of drugs is typically thirty to forty hours, and it takes four to five hours to get rid of the drug from the system. In addition, it is important to take the drug as per your doctor’s instruction and for the stipulated period.

What are some side effects of Clonazepam?

Clonazepam may have some side effects, and these side effects that are as follows:

  • Issues with coordination 
  • Blurred vision 
  • Changes in sexual performance OR sex drive
  • Frequent urination 
  • Respiratory sinus issues
  • Unsteadiness
  • Increased saliva 

Severe side effects of Clonazepam 

  • Allergic reaction (hives swelling on lips, throat, and tongue)
  • yellowing of skin and whites of the eye
  • Tingling sensation
  • Itching and burning sensation in the body

If any of the side effects worsen, seek immediate medical attention. 

Who should not use Clonazepam?

Clonazepam is safe to use and approved by the FDA. It is unsafe to use if you have any of the following health conditions.

  •  If you have significant renal or liver disease
  •  If you are expecting a mother
  •  If you are allergic to benzodiazepine 

 Diagnosed with narrow/ wide angle glaucoma

 If you are struggling with any health condition, then you must inform your doctor about it, as he will 

 Do not start, stop, or change the medication without the approval and consent of your doctor.

Does Clonazepam Cause dependance?

Clonazepam may cause dependence as it is a schedule IV controlled class drug, and using it for an extended period may result in serious health issues. The tolerance level of the drug varies from individual to individual and previous exposure to the drug. It is recommended to take the recommendation of your doctor.

How to take Clonazepam?
  • Clonazepam is available as oral therapy for managing anxiety and co-morbid Depression. 
  • Read the pack leaflet’s instructions and follow them; it is important to manage anxiety and Depression effectively.
  • Do not crush, chew or pound the tablet and take it as a whole with a glass of water. 
  • The drug dose will vary according to condition, age, general health, and response to treatment.
  •  If you are expecting a mother OR breastfeeding, inform your doctor before taking the medication.

Clonazepam is effective for managing anxiety and Depression; however, it should be taken under the supervision of a doctor. It is available in strength, and as per the etiology and severity of the condition, your doctor will prescribe you a dose for managing anxiety and allied conditions. Anxiety management requires holistic treatment to help symptoms and effectively manage anxiety attacks, panic attacks, and phobias. Your prescribing doctor may start with a low dose of Clonazepam and increase the dose to 2mg twice or thrice daily.
